Interviewer: How long have you been involved with music?
Bob: Oh! My entire life. When I was 2, I was banging on all of Mom's pots and pans in rhythm to the music. It quickly became my favorite pastime. As I grew up, music appreciation became an integral part of my life. My Dad played piano and organ and my Mom played organ & accordion. My older brother mastered all of the brass instruments and my older sister played viola & violin. "Of course, EVERYBODY sang!!!" Some of my earliest memories are of our family's Christmas caroling acappella style, almost from the time I could talk. My formal musical training began in the fifth grade. I studied drums and percussion in band classes where I also learned to read music. I began voice training at the same time. I sang in concert choirs from elementary school on. My formal training in both continued through high school in Wisconsin. I participated in dozens of music competitions. As an early teen, I began performing in large jazz bands and smaller jazz ensembles. I was also the drummer for the very first High School “Show Choir” in the country. I was fortunate to participate in symposiums at schools all over the U.S. The group was called The Corporation and performed at Disneyland, Disney World, and Busch Gardens.
Interviewer: When did you move to Colorado?
Bob: In 1979. I moved to join the Christian rock band Legacy. We toured and recorded quite a lot. I left the band in 1981 to help form the power trio X. S. It was an original metal band. We recorded and performed until they disbanded in 1993. During the 1980s, I was a member of the R&B band Antares Review. At the same time, I helped form the band Stay Late with now fellow GunnPoint Band member Ken Pickett. We played at clubs and private events all over Colorado. In the early 1990s, Stay Late began concentrating on original music and became Riding the Edge. We had some fleeting success on radio with our song "Mad Man" during Operation Desert Storm.
Interviewer: Wasn't it then you picked up the nickname "Hurricane"?
Bob: Oh, yeah. Kenny nicknamed me “Hurricane” and the name has stuck with me for over 20 years.
Today, Bob is again involved in two groups: The Gunnpoint Band and the long-standing Blues/R&B/Show band, Serious Businezz & The Lodo Horns. He has written and recorded a CD of solo music and is working on a second. Both projects are Christian rock/pop, drawing from his experiences in life and with Jesus. As Bob emphatically states, "Most importantly, in 1981 I met and married Kathy Rachel Hansen, the love of my life." 25 years later, they are the proud parents of four beautiful children: Joshua Michael, 23; James Christopher, 22; Erin Margarite, 21; Jeremy Daniel, 13. Recently they assumed guardianship of their adorable Eira Marie Shelton, 4.
